This broadly follows the design described in [this design document](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1eWW8MTko3PIqxZ32-GhsdaRSYqoDicxMB1VeessMTOg/edit?pli=1&tab=t.0). Support is provided for only two primitives for now -- simple member access and type conversion -- to demonstrate the basics of the functionality.
