This removes the filename from the file-scoped block, and places it
above to make it clear where the full SemIR begins (with multifile,
providing a barrier between).
I was suggesting this because `FloatingPoint` is pretty long. `int` and
`float` should be familiar abbreviations. `unsigned` should be familiar
to developers too, but `UnsignedInt` still feels usefully clearer for
the additional chars.
This adds instructions so that we get printing. I may adjust the
instruction format a little further to add a type, but I think the basic
setup will remain.
Note this builds on #3414
Instead of ad-hoc conversion tracking on some kinds of nodes that
conversion creates, consolidate tracking into a single node kind. This
frees up an operand on `Init` instructions that can be used to store the
destination.
Add a `NameId` that is effectively just a wrapper around a `StringId`,
with
some additional predefined values for names that don't correspond to
strings, such as the name of `self` or the function's return slot.
Following up on discussion yesterday regarding this split.
Note, I'm expecting #3341 to do IdentifierId -> NameId in SemIR. It
might be worth adding NameId creation directly to StringStore if you're
content with this setup though.
Adds a `BoundMethod` SemIR node to represent an `x.F` bound method, with
a new builtin type `BoundMethodType`. Reorganized conversion of call
expression arguments to also check and convert a `self` parameter in the
implicit parameters list.
In passing, improved diagnostics and error recovery for bad call
expressions. We now build a `call` node with the appropriate type and
value category, but with invalid arguments, if the argument conversion
failed, and diagnose calls to non-callable expressions.
`addr self` methods don't work properly yet; the `addr` is ignored for
now.

This replaces the use of `VarStorage` in this case.
Add an `UnboundFieldType` type as the type of a field, in cases where
it's referenced without an accompanying object.
Add a `BindName` node to describe the name binding performed for both
variables and fields so that we can handle them more uniformly.
1. In general, `semantics_ir` -> `sem_ir`, to match the directory name.
2. For the list of `ValueStore`-related accessors on `SemIR::File`, add
them to `check`'s `Context` object, shortening access.
Finishing what #3316 started, add more bespoke ValueStore-like
structures to File. With this, the things which previously had somewhat
boilerplate Add/Get functions are now all on side classes, giving a
uniform style of API for calling.
Note, I was on the fence about making things public on ValueStore. If
it's preferred that I make some things there protected I certainly can,
there's just a trade-off that may mean more distinct child/wrapper
types.
Retain the `ClassDeclaration` node to represent a syntactic declaration
of a class (including possibly a declaration of a generic class), but
use a separate SemIR node to represent the class type itself. This
allows us to give the two separate treatment.
The `ClassDeclaration` is still entered into the name lookup table for
its enclosing scope, but when it is named in an expression, the class
type is produced instead. When the class declaration is named in a
declaration name, it can be used to define members of the class, but an
expression that resolves to the class type cannot be used to define
members of the class.
In order to distinguish these cases, use `Name` rather than
`NameExpression` for the left-hand side of a `QualifiedName` parse node.
This removes the only use of the `Expression` form of a declaration
name, so that is also removed.
In the future, `ClassType` will also be used to describe types such as
`Vector(T)`, for which there is no corresponding `ClassDeclaration`.
Building on #3313, start using ValueStore on File. Functions and classes
are straightforward. Types here I present as a borderline case where
maybe we want a more bespoke API, but maybe this is okay? Most other
things probably need a slightly different API, which although I might do
that for a consistent interface, felt more out-of-scope for this change.
Split `node.h` into separate files for ID types (`id.h`) and for typed
nodes (`typed_nodes.h`). The per-node-kind data is now specified as part
of declaring the typed nodes, and is removed from the node kinds
x-macros, which now simply enumerate the node kinds.
Building on #3311, change SemIR to use the SharedValueStore. Since this
removes hermeticity, raw output no longer prints ints, reals, and
strings. TokenizedBuffer accessors are modified to return IDs because
values are often passed through in semantics without needing to read
them.
I would've put SharedValueStores on Context, except for the
GetArrayBoundValue convenience method. I felt awkward removing that, so
it's on File, at least for now. That's then used by the formatter and
Lower too. The flipside of this is that TokenizedBuffer has a
SharedValueStores only for printing, so maybe that's similar enough to
what File is doing.
This doesn't start shifting other SemIR members to ValueStore, but that
seems like a next step.
This includes being able to define a class that was previously
forward-declared, and being able to define a member function out-of-line
that was previously declared inside a class.
No support for fields or methods yet, and a class definition doesn't yet
cause the class to be treated as a complete type.

Track the callee expression in full, instead of only tracking the
callee's FunctionId. This results in the `name_reference` denoting the
function actually being used.
Lowering now propagates a `llvm::Function*` as the value associated with
expressions of type `<function>`.
We were not creating `NameReference` node for names produced by member
access into a namespace, such as the second name in
`Namespace.Function`, which caused lowering of calls to such names to
fail. This is now fixed, but the resulting `NameReference` node only
refers to the name and the lookup result, not to the `Namespace.`
qualifier. We'll need to decide how to fit a third operand into that
node (perhaps we can stop storing the `name_id`, since it can be derived
from the lookup result) but for now the qualifier is not tracked.
Don't produce an error diagnostic if any of the information leading to
identifying that error is itself known to be affected by an
already-diagnosed error.
Bug found by fuzzing. Problem was untyped SemIR nodes had an invalid
type id, which was retrieved by `HandlePrefixOperator` and then passed
to `context.GetUnqualifiedType`, ultimately performing an invalid access
in `semantics_ir_->GetNode`.
We prefer to make a placeholder type for functions and namespaces to
remove the need for checking for the untyped case everywhere. Eventually
functions will have their own types, but this approach will be needed
for namespaces (and perhaps other non-first-class entities like unbound
methods and interface members) long term.

This is shorter, more closely connected to code using the typed node
types, and avoids using the ambiguous word `Node` in places referring to
typed `SemIR` nodes.
Replace `SemIR::Node::GetAsFoo` and `SemIR::Node::Foo::Make` with
`SemIR::Foo` class that represents a particular kind of node, with named
fields.
Rename `SemIR::IntegerLiteral` and `SemIR::RealLiteral` to
`IntegerValue` / `RealValue` to better reflect their purpose and avoid a
name collision with the corresponding `SemIR` node kinds.
Remove `NodeKind::Invalid` and the `SemIR::Node` default constructor
entirely, as they were not used for anything.
A `let` declaration is represented by a `bind_name` node in SemIR:
```carbon-semir
%b: i32 = bind_name "b", %a
```
Because `Check` encounters the pattern before it sees the value, we
first create the `bind_name` node with an unset value and don't add it
to the block. Then, once we've seen and converted the initializer, we
update the `bind_name` to have the value and add it to the current
block, after the initializer code.
Also add `name_reference_untyped` for references to non-first-class
names without types, which currently covers namespaces and functions.
This improves the fidelity of the SemIR representation, and fixes some
issues where we would use the wrong location for nodes and diagnostics
downstream of a name reference.
We're still missing a representation for dotted name expressions, such
as `Namespace.Function`, and we don't use the `untyped` node as an
operand of any other node yet.
Fix a bug where we would perform the computation of the return location
in SemIR after we have already used it in some cases, leading to
assertion failures during lowering. Instead, accumulate a sequence of
instructions to compute the return location in a temporary block, and
overwrite the return slot with those instructions when we perform
initialization.
StubReference is replaced by a more general SpliceBlock node, that takes
a code block and a result value, executes the instructions in the block,
and produces the result. This is used in the uncommon case where more
than one instruction is required to compute the return slot, which can
happen if we need to first emit a temporary and then index into it, or
if we need to perform multiple levels of indexing before we reach an
entity to initialize.
This implements initializing expression semantics for structs and
tuples, following #2006 and discussions since.
Tuple and (and analogously, struct) literals are treated as having a
mixed expression category that is later resolved based on how the
literal is used, as either a tuple initializer or a tuple value, at
which point we create a `TupleInit` or `TupleValue` that represents the
formation of the tuple initializer or tuple value from the tuple
literal.
There's quite a lot of TODOs here, and the SemIR representation is still
not quite right, but this seems like a good place to checkpoint some
incremental progress.
Instead of modeling array initialization as a thin wrapper around tuple
initialization, handle it like a function call, with a return slot as
part of its input. This better matches how initialization via a call to
`ImplicitAs::Convert` will eventually work, and in particular lets us do
in-place initialization of arrays rather than always creating a
temporary.
Building on #3214 and #3215, updates sem_ir yaml to be:
```
- filename: name
sem_ir: [ ... ]
```
Also, changes the textual format from `package { ... }` to `file
<filename> { ... }`. My thought on packages there is:
```
file "foo.carbon" {
package MyPackage
...
}
```
The reason for putting the file first is that it's easier if we put what
we're grouping on first, whereas the package is an "annotation" on the
file.
Continuing with #3070. Just a dir and file rename (only prefix change is
lexer_file_test). Everything in the lex dir should be marked as a move.
Note, I think this closes#3070. There may still be further cleanup
later, but the organizational changes suggested there are being
completed.

Continuing with #3070. Just a dir and file rename (mostly removing
prefixes, although for parse_tree_fuzzer and parse_tree_file_test I'm
dropping "tree" instead of "parse"). Everything in the parse dir should
be marked as a move.
Continuing along with #3070. Note this is just a file rename, with BUILD
edits; every file previously in semantics/ should show as moved (except
maybe BUILDs, which split).
